One of the biggest changes in how corporations operate today is in how they communicate with the public. Whereas previously, a firm would rely on printed publications, now we have the internet. And so this too has influenced how firms handle public relations. With the introduction of blogging, all of a sudden we’re reading informal updates direct from the head chiefs rather than the normal finespun, orthodox column commonly found in their corporate brochure. Not only that, but the net has made communication much less passive and far more engaged. We also know far more in terms of target demographics because of the trail of clicks they make with their actions. Consequently it’s vital that a company can respond to the opinions given by their visitors and form their public-facing messages accordingly.

With such dramatic changes, does that mean firms have much more power to determine how the market perceives them? For sure it does. Companies are now devoting increasingly more time on public relations, as so many new “public meeting places” have opened up with new technologies.
