New Safety Rules Suggested for Road Works
Transport Minister, Sadiq Khan has clearly stipulated that all road works will have to be properly signed and will have to adhere to stringent laws pertaining to safety under plans published by him.
Utility firms already have to clearly supply information related to the road works at the sites. They have to give a contact number as well as information on the body that is executing the work. They also have to ensure that they meet the rigorous safety standards that are prevalent. Under the current proposals, even the councils that are carrying on their own work will have to ensure strict adherence to these rules under law.
Additionally, under the plans that are being considered, anybody who is in charge of road works will have to now meet more rigorous standards pertaining to the safety of disabled persons. They would have to ensure that sites are adequately guarded and such facilities are present as would provide wheelchair users with more freedom of movement.
Moreover, additional changes regarding the Safety Code of Practice include:
* Extra information on the maintenance and safety of sites even when they are not attended, and
*Provisions for mandatory new equipment in order to facilitate the safety of workers as well as road users, which includes safety barriers as well as high visibility jackets.
Mr. Khan stated that he did not want to hear excuses as to why road works could not be carried out with more care and consideration for the people who travel and who need it the most. He further said that it was not acceptable that works were not properly signed or left in a hazardous state or constructed without considering the needs of the road users, especially for the people who are disabled.
The announcement is a part of the Department for Transport’s action plan for the purpose of street works, which was highlighted in the recent past. The action plans propose to lessen the problems initiated by street works and the consultation follows recent proposals in order to hike the maximum rates for exceeding the target date for completion.
